Google Wave: 5 Ways It Could Change the Web

Google Wave arrives on September 30th. On that day, Google (Google) will start sending out 100,000 invites to non-developers to its much-anticipated real-time communication platform.

It’s not even released and it’s generating more hype than almost any other web product in recent memory. The reason stems from its game-changing features and their potential applications on business, education, customer service, email, social networking, and more.

So with Wave on the way, we wanted to explore some of the potential of Google’s upcoming product. We have a few of our own ideas and included some from Google Wave (Google Wave) developers, but more than anything, we want your ideas, so be sure to leave your great Google Wave invention in the comments! Who knows, maybe we’ll feature them in the future!

1. Wave-Powered Forums

This idea’s actually been in my head before, but it’s articulated with some depth by Andrew Camel in the Google Wave API Google Group:

“So I thought that it would be an awesome feature of google wave to have it power a forum. Each thread, instead of being multiple different posts, it would just be a google wave. So, instead of having to try a discussion by posting and going back to the page and checking for new replies and while you were posting, you missed a new part of the discussion, you can post like you are having an instant-message session and you can also save the posts like forum threads. I really think that this would be a great use of the google wave api.”

Real-time threads? Saving waves like forum threads? Google Wave?! Sign us up!

2. Wave-powered Commenting System

We actually alluded to this possibility in our Google Wave Guide when we discussed Wave Embeds:

“One possibility: Google Wave Embeds may be a real-time replacement to static comments. If Google perfects wave embeds, you could even see YouTube (YouTube).com comments replaced with waves, although it is way too early to make any calls on the potential of this.”

Now that we’ve had some time to play with Wave, we think more than ever that Wave as a commenting system is a real possibility. Each blog post or YouTube video could have a new wave, where users could converse about practically anything in real-time. Anybody who comes in late can just play back the wave and get up to speed. It could be a whole new era for commenting.

3. Wave-Based Content Management System

A thread in the API group discusses the possibility of using Wave as a project management system. I’ll be honest – even I’ve been toying with this idea. Here’s what Jason Salas said in the thread:

I think that maybe many of the major CMS vendors will create extensions (if we don’t do it ourselves) to integrate their products with Wave. That’s what I’m working on now. But that is a neat idea to actually use Wave as its own CMS platform, with assumed features
like document creation/management, scheduling, RSS feeds, (micro) blogging, archival/search, etc.”

4. Wave for Customer Support

This idea actually comes from a thread in the Google Wave development preview titled “What Will You Use it For?” It’s a remarkable discussion and brainstorming session over the potential of wave. One of the most fleshed-out ideas in the thread, though, is Wave for customer support. Here are some of the bullet-points for how Wave could be used in customer support:

- Sending trouble tickets
- Incident tracking can be a wave
- Call center analytics gadget
- Distribution list gadget
- Customer meta-data gadget
- Surveys can be a wave

Real-time customer support? Yeah, someone please build that.

5. Wave for Education

We reported a few days ago that Google is giving some schools and businesses an early look at Google Wave. But why? What could Wave possibly accomplish in the realm of education and business? A lot, we firmly believe.

I refer once again to the “What Will You Use it For?” Wave in the dev preview for some ideas for how Wave can be used in education.

Google’s Orkut Drops Support for IE6

Microsoft may be opposed, but the campaign to kill off Internet Explorer 6 has gained a powerful ally this week: GoogleGoogleGoogle’s OrkutOrkutOrkut, the leading social network in Brazil, has vowed to stop supporting the browser.

If you visit Orkut using IE6 today, you’ll see a warning message that says Orkut is ending support for the browser, while recommending other browsers to try: Internet ExplorerInternet ExplorerInternet Explorer 8, ChromeChromeChrome, and FirefoxFirefoxFirefox:

Given that Chrome is Google’s IE challenger, it could be seen as generous that Google would push IE8 ahead of its own product. Nonetheless, the greater effect is to push many Brazilian web users away from the outdated IE6 and consider the benefits of a modern web browser: a move that’s good for Google and great for the web design community.
“IE6 No More” Campaign

IE6 No More ImageGoogle’s move comes immediately after the formation of IE6 No More, a group of websites united to accelerate the switch away from the outdated IE6 browser. Last week we reported that more than 75 sites had joined the effort, including DisqusDisqusDisqus, Justin.tv and PosterousPosterousPosterous. All the sites in the group display a message to IE6 users asking them to switch to a more modern browser.

Tips for Getting Crawled Faster by Google

Probably the most important step in getting your site found in a search engine is the one in which the search engine crawls it. There are things that can be done and things that can be avoided to make this process as painless as possible for the search engine, which will in turn, make it as painless as possible for the webmaster.

Since Google dominates the search market share by such a large market share, it is always a good idea to listen to what they have to say about such matters. So when they post a presentation with tips on optimizing crawling and indexing, you'll probably want to pay attention.

Google has done just that, highlighting things to stay away from, and things you can do to enhance your site's crawlability. Here is that presentation with specific examples of URLs.

"The Internet is a big place; new content is being created all the time," says Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa. "Google has a finite number of resources, so when faced with the nearly-infinite quantity of content that's available online, Googlebot is only able to find and crawl a percentage of that content. Then, of the content we've crawled, we're only able to index a portion."

"URLs are like the bridges between your website and a search engine's crawler: crawlers need to be able to find and cross those bridges (i.e., find and crawl your URLs) in order to get to your site's content," continues Moskwa. "If your URLs are complicated or redundant, crawlers are going to spend time tracing and retracing their steps; if your URLs are organized and lead directly to distinct content, crawlers can spend their time accessing your content rather than crawling through empty pages, or crawling the same content over and over via different URLs."

If you want to get crawled faster by Google, you should remove user-specific details from URLs. Specifics of this can be viewed in the slideshow. Basically, URL parameters that don't change the content of the page, should be removed and put into a cookie. This will reduce the number of URLs that point to the same content, and speed up crawling.

Google says infinite spaces are a waste of time and bandwidth for all, which is why you should consider taking action when you have calendars that link to infinite numbers of past/future dates with unique URLs, or other paginated data.

Tell Google to ignore pages it can't crawl. This includes things like log-in pages, contact forms, shopping carts, and other pages that require users to perform actions that crawlers can't perform themselves. You can do this with the robots.txt file.

Finally, avoid duplicate content when possible. Google likes to have one URL for each piece of content. They do recognize that this is not always possible though (because of content management systems and what have you), which is why the canonical link element exists to let you specify the preferred URL for a particular piece of content. computerinfo

Email Marketing Remains Reliable

Keeping up with the latest marketing techniques is a good thing; new stuff can be very useful. At the same time, the process of keeping up can act to prevent a person from ever getting ahead, and an expert recently spoke up to say that email marketing remains effective.

Gail Goodman named three misconceptions about email marketing, with the first being that the inbox is irrelevant. She wrote, "It's true that consumers are getting more e-mail now than ever before. That's exactly why permission-based e-mail marketing is so valuable in reaching customers overwhelmed by inbox overload. . . . [W]hen someone signs up for your mailing list, they're giving you a vote of confidence that your e-mail content is valuable to them."

The second misconception relates to Facebook, Twitter, and all that: "social media has replaced email marketing." Goodman posits that email is a better way of reaching potential customers on a one-on-way basis than, say, a passing tweet that 300 other people may or may not view.

Finally, if you're concerned that young people don't use email anymore, you might simply be wrong, according to Goodman. Many young people use their email accounts to keep track of important, more formal, stuff, including work- and school-related communication.

Unless you've got some serious data to support a switch, then, try not to completely abandon reliable marketing methods for flavor-of-the-moment approaches. More

Microsoft and Yahoo Finally Announce Deal

Well, they've finally gone and done it. Microsoft and Yahoo have partnered to "change the search landscape." The two companies today announced a long-awaited deal, in which Microsoft will power Yahoo search while Yahoo will become the exclusive search advertising provider for Microsoft's search engine, Bing.

You know this history by now. Here's what the companies have to say:

Carol Bartz "This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo!, our users, and the industry, and I believe it establishes the foundation for a new era of Internet innovation and development," said Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz. "Users will continue to experience search as a vital part of their Yahoo! experiences and will enjoy increased innovation thanks to the scale and resources this deal provides. Advertisers will also benefit from scale and enjoy greater ease of use and efficiencies working with a single platform and sales team for premium advertisers. Finally, this deal will help us increase our investments in priority areas in winning audience properties, display advertising capabilities and mobile experiences."

Steve BallmerMicrosoft CEO Steve Ballmer said, "Through this agreement with Yahoo!, we will create more innovation in search, better value for advertisers and real consumer choice in a market currently dominated by a single company," said Ballmer. "Success in search requires both innovation and scale. With our new Bing search platform, we’ve created breakthrough innovation and features. This agreement with Yahoo! will provide the scale we need to deliver even more rapid advances in relevancy and usefulness. Microsoft and Yahoo! know there’s so much more that search could be. This agreement gives us the scale and resources to create the future of search."

Key Terms as highlighted in the announcement:

- The term of the agreement is 10 years;

- Microsoft will acquire an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo!’s core search technologies, and Microsoft will have the ability to integrate Yahoo! search technologies into its existing Web search platforms;

- Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Yahoo! will continue to use its technology and data in other areas of its business such as enhancing display advertising technology;

- Yahoo! will become the exclusive worldwide relationship sales force for both companies’ premium search advertisers. Self-serve advertising for both companies will be fulfilled by Microsoft’s AdCenter platform, and prices for all search ads will continue to be set by AdCenter’s automated auction process;

- Microsoft will compensate Yahoo! through a revenue sharing agreement on traffic generated on Yahoo!’s network of both owned and operated (O&O) and affiliate sites;

- Microsoft will pay traffic acquisition costs (TAC) to Yahoo! at an initial rate of 88 percent of search revenue generated on Yahoo!’s O&O sites during the first five years of the agreement; and

- Yahoo! will continue to syndicate its existing search affiliate partnerships.

- Microsoft will guarantee Yahoo!’s O&O revenue per search (RPS) in each country for the first 18 months following initial implementation in that country;

- At full implementation (expected to occur within 24 months following regulatory approval), Yahoo! estimates, based on current levels of revenue and current operating expenses, that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual GAAP operating income of approximately $500 million and capital expenditure savings of approximately $200 million. Yahoo! also estimates that this agreement will provide a benefit to annual operating cash flow of approximately $275 million; and

- The agreement protects consumer privacy by limiting the data shared between the companies to the minimum necessary to operate and improve the combined search platform, and restricts the use of search data shared between the companies. Will Twitter Search Be the Next Wikipedia Search?

After checking out Bing's explanation of how it handles reference searches, it got me thinking how big of a role Wikipedia plays in search. Wikipedia entries are often among the top results in Google, and clearly they are a big part of Bing's strategy as well.

By this time next year, these are the only two search engines we're going to be talking about as far as who has how much market share. Yahoo of course will be using Bing to deliver its results, so essentially the big 3 will become the big 2.

If Twitter plays a significant role in the search market, than Wikipedia sure does as well, because it gets a lot more unique visitors than Twitter. In fact, at this point it gets more than Bing too, although that looks to be on pace to change pretty soon.

Twitter results are useful (can be at least) for timely information. Wikipedia results are useful for reference information. These are two very different niches, yet both important ones. I think it's fair to assume that Google drives a great many of those unique visitors to Wikipedia, and Bing will drive an increasingly large amount too. The question is how many people just go to Wikipedia and search?

Right now, we're assuming that people are and will just go to Twitter to search when they want to see what people are saying "right now" about something. That's why Twitter's homepage redesign is significant. Google and Bing don't have real real-time search offerings in place...yet.

Twitter Search is significant to the industry right now, but that significance could dwindle once Google and Microsoft start incorporating true real-time search into their own results. We don't know exactly how either search engine will handle this, but I think it's safe to assume that it's coming sooner or later. I tend to believe real-time results will eventually make their way into Google's Universal results for example.

Once that happens, Twitter Search may not be as important as it appears to be now. I liken it to the importance of Wikipedia search. You can search Wikipedia when you want, and it is helpful. Users will still be able to do the same with Twitter, but chances are, most will search Google or Bing in the future and get their Twitter results from there (based on relevancy), much like they get their Wikipedia results now.

Senators Push For Ban On Texting While Driving

A group of Democratic senators are co-sponsoring legislation that would ban texting while driving nationwide.

The four senators co-sponsoring the legislation - Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Kay Hagan (D-N.C.). The legislation would force states to ban texting while driving or risk losing all federal highway funds. The legislation is set to be announced at a press conference today.

Fourteen states currently have bans in place that ban texting while driving, while five states and the District of Columbia, ban all drivers from talking on a handheld cell phone while driving.

Earlier this week, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute released a study that found truck drivers who text while driving are 23 more times likely to be in a traffic accident. The study found talking on a cell phone increased the risk of an accident for drivers of cars, light trucks and heavy trucks, but was most risky for tuck drivers who used texting.

Schumer is also pushing for legislation that would ban bus drivers and train conductors from texting while on the job.

"Texting while conducting a train or driving a bus is not only irresponsible, it's extremely dangerous," Schumer said.

Tony La Russa sues Twitter over alleged fake page

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is suing the social-networking site Twitter, claiming an unauthorized page using his name damaged his reputation and caused emotional distress.

The suit filed last month in the Superior Court of California in San Francisco seeks unspecified damages.

Messages left Thursday with La Russa's attorney and San Francisco-based Twitter were not returned.

The lawsuit claims that someone created a false account under La Russa's name and posted updates, known as "tweets," that gave the false impression that the comments came from La Russa. The suit said the comments were "derogatory and demeaning" and damaged La Russa's trademark rights.

The account bearing La Russa's name is no longer active.

La Russa's lawsuit said the page bearing his name was hurtful to the 64-year-old manager, who has led the Cardinals since 1996 and also managed the Chicago White Sox and Oakland A's during a 30-year managerial career.

The lawsuit includes a screenshot of tweets with the heading "Hey there! Tony La Russa is using Twitter," with a picture of the manager. Among other things, the lawsuit claims the page includes distasteful references to two Cardinals pitchers who have died in recent years.

The same page includes an aside that reads, "Bio Parodies are fun for everyone."

Some professional athletes and others connected to pro sports have embraced Twitter. Shaquille O'Neal posted a message on his Twitter.com site saying he was pulling for former teammate Kobe Bryant to win a fourth championship as the Lakers entered the NBA finals against Orlando.

"I am saying it today and today only," O'Neal tweeted. "I want kobe bryant to get number four, spread da word."

Buffalo Bills receiver Terrell Owens posted a message on his Twitter site Tuesday that his search for a home to rent hit a snag because residents "(don't) want any drama n their neighborhood!! LOL!!! Wow!!." more..

Debating the power of Google's Wave

We've had about a week to absorb the Google's pitch for Wave, its new experimental communication platform, and about a day to try the actual early "sandbox" build of the service. See our hands-on review. But there's more to talk about with Wave. It's not just an app, it's an important evolution in the philosophy of written communication.

People will see Wave in different ways. For some, it's a clever take on e-mail. Others will see it as instant messaging with new features. Developers will look at Wave's open specs and APIs, and see a framework for new collaborative apps. But is it really any of these things, or just a crazy experiment from Google's Australian outpost?

Is it better than e-mail?

CNET Editor Rafe Needleman:

In some ways, it really is. With Wave, you don't reply to a message with a new message, you instead add your reply to the message itself. When there are multiple people involved in a conversation, this can prevent a lot of confusion. There's only one "wave" in a conversation, not a volley of messages flying around that repeat each other.

CNET Senior Writer Stephen Shankland:

Gmail users accustomed to conversation view, which stacks the back-and-forth discussion into a single view, will have an easier time adjusting to Wave's ways.

And just as Gmail works best if you only deal with one e-mail at a time, Wave is good at only one wave at a time. That's fine for a lot of IM-like chats, but if you work in depth on multiple waves simultaneously, think about opening multiple browser tabs. There are boldface indicators of new activity in your inbox, which tell you who's active, but with multiple tabs you won't always see them--especially if your inbox gets crowded with new waves.

Needleman:

It's fun to play with now, but we don't know what using Wave will be like once we start getting overflowing inboxes of waves.

Shankland:

Right. Every Net communication technology goes through a honeymoon period where just you and your close contacts use it. Then the whole Net discovers it and your little paradise becomes just another conduit for spam, inane jokes, and trivia. Expect the same issues with Wave.

Needleman:

The thing everyone is going to make a big deal of in Wave is that you can interrupt someone who's carefully writing a message to you. You can barge into a message before they're done with it, demand the writer's immediate attention, and force them to shift from composing to replying. There will be a way to hide your real-time activity in Wave, but the default mode is real-time. It's interruptive and very different. There will be people who hate it.

But If You Think About It, The Very Existence Of The Game That Led To Their Showing Up During The Xbox Press Briefing, Harmonix And Mtv Games' "Beatles: Rock Band," Is Even More Surprising. After All, The Beatles Have, Over The Years, Maintained A Stranglehold Over Control Of Their Music. For Example The Beatles Are Still The Holy Grail That Itunes Has Not Yet Been Able To Corral.

The game will be released on September 9 (09.09.09) on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the Wii.

So how did the game come to pass?

Since the two remaining Beatles weren't able to come to the phone for this article, I decided to stop by the Harmonix booth at E3 and ask the game's lead designer, Chris Foster, for the skinny behind what has got to be one of the biggest coups in video gaming history.

Foster said the story begins a couple of years ago, when MTV President Van Toffler ran into Dhani Harrison, son of the late Beatles guitarist George Harrison, in some random social setting.

"It was just sort of through happenstance," Foster said. "Dhani was a big 'Rock Band' fan, and there was this sort of, 'Wouldn't it be nice if...but it'll never happen.'"

But being a "Rock Band" fan, Dhani Harrison took his idea to Harmonix CEO and co-founder Alex Rigopulos and began a conversation about what a Beatles version of "Rock Band" could be. Foster said that the idea seemed like a huge challenge, but, deciding to pursue it, Harrison began evangelizing the idea to Apple Corps, the Beatles' U.K. publisher, and its shareholders, particularly McCartney, Starr, and Ono.

"So then, from that point, it was just sort of getting them familiar with ('Rock Band')," Foster said, "and getting them understanding what the game could be like."

By now, the discussions were far enough along that Harmonix put together a simple demo of the kind of music and conceptual art that could be used in the game, Foster said.

And, amazingly, inexplicably, it worked.

Have head One of Google Chrome’s First Extensions: AdSweep

AdBlock Plus, an add-on that prevents advertisements from being loaded on web pages, is one of the most popular add-ons for Firefox (Firefox reviews). The non-profit Mozilla Foundation (whose corporate arm, Mozilla Corporation, does profit mainly from advertising) has never tried to thwart the add-on.

For the maker of Chrome (Chrome reviews), Google (Google reviews), advertising is a much more serious business. The company makes billions of dollars in web-based advertising, and it definitely won’t be too happy when AdSweep, an ad-blocking extension for Chrome, becomes widely available.

Yes, this extension has been around for a couple of months, but extensions aren’t yet officially supported by Chrome and there’s no easy way to install it. This will change, as Google has recently opened up an API for third party developers, with plans to start officially supporting extensions soon.

According to LA Times, Google has been ambiguous on the subject so far. Of course, Google Chrome (Google Chrome reviews) has a relatively small chunk of the web browser market (1.42% in April, according to some estimates), and the users that install AdSweep will not be a threat to its revenue. But ultimately, Google’s goal for Chrome is to attain as much market share as possible; if Chrome’s market share rises, AdSweep and similar extensions will become more and more of a problem for Google.more

Bing, Microsoft’s latest effort to beat Google (Google reviews) at what it does best - search - is now live for everyone. It’s bearing the ubiquitous “beta” tag, and contrary to what many expected from Microsoft, the search is decent. But it’s also strangely familiar. Is it decent enough to compete with Google? Read on.

Anxious to see what Microsoft has in store for us, I’ve fired up a couple of usual examples: “Mashable (Mashable reviews)“, “Stan Schroeder” (the standard vanity searches), “MSI megabook 677” (some random piece of hardware), “Star Trek” (new movie, old series, let’s see which will get prioritized) etc.

The results were solid, too good, perhaps, for a very new search engine, but also oddly familiar. And then it dawned on me: it’s Live.com. The results for any query are exactly the same as on Live.com. And we’re not talking about the first couple of results; we’re talking about all results.

(*note: I was lucky to be able to try it out, because 20 minutes after I started writing this article, Live.com started redirecting to Bing.com. Of course, it’s now the same search engine.)

So, what does Bing do differently? It puts related search on the left side of the screen, instead of the right. It also gives you short preview of the contents of search results as you mouse over them, and autoplays videos. Nice. But there’s no trace of better organization of search results that we were promised, or anything really interesting here. Videos, images? Also pretty much the same as on Live.com. Shopping? Merely a redirect to www.ciao.co.uk.

*edit: the above stands for the UK version of Bing. Manually setting the location to various places in the world, i.e. switching from UK to US changes Bing significantly. There’s at least three very different versions of Bing right now, and depending on where you are, your Bing experience will be very different. It’s a very weird decision from Microsoft, bound to cause a lot of confusion, but hey: it’s the Microsoft way.

So, let’s test the US version. The Shopping is now Bing’s own, instead of a redirect to Ciao, while video and image search is very similar in both versions. The core of the search engine, from what I can see, is still Live.com, but the search results for some queries are indeed organized topically; for example, for “Star Trek” the results will be divided into general results, Star Trek cast, Star Trek Wallpapers, Theme Song, DVD, Episodes, and so forth. It doesn’t always work; for “Wolverine,” I just get the standard list of results; oddly enough, they’re worse on the US version (if you’re looking for the movie, of course) than on the UK version, which brings more results relevant to Wolverine the movie. For the same query (”Wolverine“), Google blows both out of the water.

How useful are Bing’s search subcategories, which are arguably its most important feature? Depends. If you’re used to entering precise queries, such as “Starbucks menu”, you’ll never see them. If you prefer entering a broader query “Starbucks” and then choosing from subcategories such as Recipes, Menu, Franchise, Nutrition and Coupons, Bing will work great. However, these subcategories aren’t all that different from ye olde search suggestions, and although they’re often helpful, I doubt they will revolutionize search.

Most importantly, Bing is currently still changing. Is Google Wave a Twitter Killer ?

While the world has focused on Google Wave as a mash-up of chat, e-mail, and document sharing, it's really something else: Google Wave could be the Twitter that everyone really wants. Maybe it's the Facebook, too.

Shown for the first time on Thursday at Google's I/O developer conference, Wave is described as "equal part conversation and document" for its uses as a collaboration tool. But, the leap from what Google says Wave is today to what it can easily become is a short one.

If Google wants to compete, head-to-head, with Twitter and Facebook, Wave is the perfect start. It may not be a competitor when it first becomes publicly available, perhaps because the merging of documents, feeds, photos, e-mail, instant messaging, event planning, and other features is likely to seem so unfamiliar to users.

It will likely take time before would-be users really understand what Wave does and can be used for. How much time? Months, not years.

Then give Wave a more public face--documents, chats, IMs, etc.--to be shared with everyone on your contact list or the world at-large and Wave does everything Facebook and Twitter do. And more.

It is not a foregone conclusion this will happen. Outside its core search business and related tools, Google has faced an uphill battle for user acceptance. However, Wave, by combining so many otherwise separate Google features, could finally provide the compelling experience users seek.
Build, Not Buy

For months there have been rumors that Google would buy one (both?) of the big social network players. Why didn't it? With Wave almost ready to release, why spend the money to purchase a large distraction?

Another important thing: Google already has a built-in, advertising-based business model that customers understand. That is a huge thing, considering that Twitter and Facebook are still looking for ways to monetize their users.

While Google has not announced a release date, it only describes availability as "later this year," the company has started a developer program, released a set of APIs, and is providing limited access to developers seeking to test their Wave-based applications. An active developer forum now exists, as well as a Wave development team blog.
Waving For Business

Google Wave has obvious business uses, combining tools that businesspeople use every day. It will be important that the Wave mail client and other applications learn to work with closely what we already use and for Wave to be something people can adopt without disrupting how they already work.

That has been a challenge for Google in the past, but if Wave is to achieve its great potential it must be easy to adopt and add to the way people already work.

The new voice-activated Google Mobile app for the iPhone is finally here. Whatever the reason for the delay, it was worth the wait. As we wrote last week, the search app knows when you bring the phone to your face to speak into it. It beeps, you talk, and it executes a Google search on what you said. (If you're using a headset, you have to press a button. You can type in your queries, too, if you want.)

It is freakishly accurate. It's not perfect, but it's extremely good. Good enough to be used frequently, I'd say, although this review is based on only 15 minutes of experimentation.

I searched for names of people I know, businesses nearby, airline information, and other miscellaneous data. The service bungled one nearby restaurant, but got everything else right. It uses the phone's location data to narrow down results. Try searching for "sushi" and you'll get your closest sushi restaurants at the top of your search results.

The Google Mobile app gives you its answers in text, which makes for a very quick experience. If your result returns phone numbers, you can dial the phone by clicking on one. But if you're driving in your car and need a quick connection, use Goog411 instead, which is a full voice-in, voice-out experience.

As others have noted, Google Mobile doesn't let you do voice dialing from your own contact list. It's frustrating to be able to search the entire Web with your voice but not be able to search your own phone. But it's still a useful and very cool little service.

latest laptops in Eighteen-inch laptops compared -- is size everything?

We tend to like our laptops either really big or really small. Hence our fascination with both tiny Netbooks and oversize 18-inch laptops. We've reviewed four 18-inch models so far, and we expect to see even more in the future, as PC makers move from 16:10 screens to 16:9 screens. These 1,920x1,080 screens have the same native resolution as a 1080p HDTV, and make for an impressive package for movie watchers when coupled with a Blu-ray drive or other HD content (most current laptop screens are 16:10, which leave you with black bars on the top and bottom of your screen when viewing HDTV programs or Blu-ray movies).

Acer's Aspire 8920-6671 was the first laptop we'd seen with an 18.4-inch display. It was pricey, at $2,499, but included a unique set of touch-sensitive media controls (which we hear are unfortunately being dropped from future models).

The HP HDX18 shows mainstream PC makers getting in on the act, and the added edge-to-edge glass on the display (similar to what's on the new MacBooks), makes for a nice cinematic experience.

Sony is known for high-end, aesthetically pleasing, but expensive, systems. Of the 18-inch laptops we've looked at so far, the fixed-configuration $1,849 Vaio AW125J/H was surprisingly the least expensive Blu-ray-equipped model, beating out the HP HDX18 and the Acer Aspire 8920 by a few hundred dollars. Sony also offers similar models (such as the Vaio AW170) that can be configured with up to 1TB of hard-drive space and cost up to $3,299.

The odd man out in our first batch of 18-inch laptops was the Toshiba Qosmio G55. It has an 18-inch display, but no Blu-ray, and even the resolution was off--a mere 1,680x945. The selling points were some Web-cam gesture controls (which hardly worked), and a second Cell processor (just like the chip powering the PlayStation 3). Toshiba calls this combo "Quad Core HD," and uses the extra horsepower for accelerated video encoding (as long as you're using the included software).

The slim tower PC trend makes perfect sense to us. For those who only need a basic desktop, why bother with a clunky midtower design?

Each of these trimmed-down PCs will provide all you need to get online, create documents, and play around with your digital media. And all but two of these units (bad show, Slimline and Inspiron) invite you to bring them into your living room and connect directly to your television via an HDMI output.

None of these sub-$1,000 desktops is a multimedia powerhouse, so forget about watching HD video, 3D gaming, or intensive editing. But for the basics, in a small, easy-to-like package, these slim tower desktops have a lot of appeal.

The Bottom Line The Asus Essentio is perhaps the best conceived of the recent round of living-room-friendly slim tower desktops. It's just powerful enough, and it comes with the right mix of features to allow it to do what living room PCs do best, without overreaching. As much as Acer's Aspire X3200 surpasses other pricier PCs with its wide array of useful inputs and outputs, you'll have a hard time choosing between it and its otherwise identical dual-core Acer linemate of the same price. If you're a multitasker on a budget, you'll likely prefer this model's triple-core CPU. As opposed to previous Slimline models, the HP Pavilion Slimline s3500f tosses aside home theater aspirations and targets budget buyers looking for a compact, cheap PC. If you're considering all of the computers in the $700 to $1,000 price range, the Dell Studio Hybrid is not very compelling. However, if you limit yourself to the very specific niche of small PCs, you'll appreciate this system's clever design and its relatively powerful hardware. On certain tests, Dell's off-the-shelf Inspiron 530s comes out ahead of its slim-tower competition, but its situational performance edge isn't dramatic enough to overcome its underwhelming features. You can find cheaper systems that might be a tick slower on certain tasks, but on balance they'll let you do more.

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process by which webmasters and online business owners get their websites to rank highly in SERPs (search engine results pages) for keyword phrases that are both heavily searched for and related to their industry or niche. Two of the biggest types of SEO work are keyword optimization and link-building (increasing the number of incoming links to a website or specific page)

Here are a few SEO tips to keep in mind when thinking about keyword optimization for a new website or online business:

1. Use keyword suggestion tools to research keyword phrases related to the website’s or online business’ industry or niche topic.

2. Don’t focus exclusively on very general (often one-word) keywords or keyword phrases that would be very difficult to earn a high search engine placement for. At the same time, don’t focus on keyword phrases that no one is searching for. It’s sometimes better to be a “big fish in a smaller pond” than a “little fish in big pond” where you can’t likely rise to the top.

3. Include keyword phrases throughout a page, with particular emphasis on titles, highlighted subheadings, and early in any text areas.

Building incoming links to a website or online business is also an important part of SEO and improving search engine rankings. This is because search engines look at incoming links almost like a “vote” where another website is saying the site, or some page within the site, is of high enough quality to recommend to its visitors. Obviously, link-building can be manipulated in many ways that don’t equate to “votes” (such as by purchasing banner ads or text links on another website). AMD: Netbooks? No thanks

In case you missed it, Advanced Micro Devices is passing on Netbooks. At least as Intel and its partners have defined the category.
AMD thinks that ultrathin 13-inch designs such as the MacBook Air address a more viable market than what it calls mininotebooks.

In fact, a lot of the media outlets missed this point completely, insisting that AMD is going to go head-to-head with Intel on Netbook processors--apparently because it satisfies a journalistic boilerplate that AMD must, just must, have a direct response to Intel's Atom.
Just to set the record straight, here's what AMD Chief Executive Dirk Meyer said Thursday: "We're ignoring the Netbook phenomenon--just thinking about PC form factors above that form factor."
I think that is a pretty unambiguous statement. But if that wasn't clear enough, here's what Bahr Mahony, director of notebook product marketing at AMD said: "We're going to offer the Congo and Yukon platforms as an alternative (to processors and chipsets for Netbooks). There are a fair number of people that are not satisfied with the experience they're getting on these mininotebook platforms." (AMD uses the terms Netbook and mininotebook interchangeably.)
Mahony added that the dissatisfaction with Netbooks "has been exhibited by the high return rates that have been seen on these mininotebooks."
Asus or Acer may have something to say about that, but at the very least, this offers a fresh perspective on this possibly overhyped category.
AMD's strategy seems solid, in my opinion. Go for a segment that is bigger and better than Netbooks. The ultraportable category (the MacBook Air being the best example) is full of attractive but expensive designs. Why not work with PC makers to offer an ultrathin, ultralight, full-featured 13-inch notebook that is priced a lot less than $1,800? Why not $600 or $700?
In addition to the conventional criticism of Netbooks (small screens, tiny keyboards), an underrated fact is that many users eventually get the feeling that they're stuck with an underpowered laptop.
And being underpowered often hinges on lackluster graphics. In a conversation Thursday with Pat Moorhead, vice president of advanced marketing at AMD, he pointed to the graphics capability of AMD's upcoming Conesus CPU, which will use ATI's RS780M graphics: better graphics and better user experience overall.
The MacBook Air offers probably the best proof of this thinking. Apple (which, if you haven't noticed, doesn't offer a netbook), originally went with Intel's integrated graphics in the Air, but due to customer dissatisfaction with graphics performance, it added Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics to its newest models.
Delivering a more powerful dual-core processor (such as AMD's Conesus) for this segment would also turn some heads and offer a more full-featured experience. Intel will be the first one to tell you that Atom is underpowered for many applications.
Are AMD customers clamoring for Netbooks like Intel customers are? "Frankly, I don't get the same answer when I talk to the customer base," AMD's Meyer said Thursday. When it rains, it pours. In recent weeks, we've seen the release of a number of highly anticipated smartphones, including the RIM BlackBerry Bold and the T-Mobile G1, and now we have the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. First announced at GSMA 2008 in February, the Xperia X1 made headlines for being the company's first Windows Mobile device and for its interactive panel interface. It was such a showstopper that we barely got a look at the smartphone because of the swarms of spectators.

Fast-forward to now, where the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is finally ready for release and we've had a chance to spend some time with the final product. The X1 panel interface is undoubtedly cool, and we like having that extra level of personalization. It's also a well-crafted handset with a strong set of features and good performance. However, we have big doubts about its success. Unfortunately, the Xperia X1 will not be offered by a U.S. carrier at this time, but you will be able to buy it unlocked from Sony Style stores for $799.99. Yes, you read right: $799.99. Sony Ericsson was very clear in stating that the Xperia X1 is aimed at customers looking for a high-end phone, but even so, this is a bit ridiculous. Aside from the interactive panels and a couple of multimedia extras, Xperia X1 is very much like other Windows Mobile 6.1 devices and the aforementioned features don't seem to justify spending the extra dough. Unless you've got money to burn, we just can't imagine spending $800 for the phone. It's truly a luxury item. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will be available for preorder on November 13 from the Sony Style Web site and will be in stores November 28.

Design
Smartphones with slide-out keyboards (a la AT&T Tilt and Sprint Mogul) have a tendency to be large and bulky, but this certainly isn't the case with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. At 4.4 inches tall by 2.1 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep and 5.6 ounces, the Xperia X1 is compact and has a nice, solid construction. The phone is available in two colors: silver or black. We reviewed the silver model, which has an attractive steel finish and feels cool in the hand. The X1 definitely has wow factor and Sony Ericsson really did a nice job on the hardware.

For a device that has a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 is quite a compact handset.

The Xperia X1 features a 3-inch touch screen that displays 65,536 colors at an 800x480 pixel resolution. With such a sharp resolution, it's no surprise that images and text looked crisp and colors were vibrant. However, the highlight of the smartphone is the interactive panel interface. Sony Ericsson created this feature to give users one-touch access to the features they wanted and the ability to customize the smartphone to their lifestyle.

Basically, you can choose from nine panels and, depending on whether you're at work or at play, you can pick whichever panel you want to fit your needs and have that be your Today screen for the day. Seven panels come preloaded on the device: Microsoft Today, Sony Ericsson (two variations), Google, 3D Fish, Xperia Radio, and Media Xperience. Most are self-explanatory, but if you're curious about the 3D Fish, it basically shows you the date and time and then three or four fish, which each represent some type of notification. For example, the speckled fish (called Ryukin) alerts you to missed calls, and the other fish will turn from one color to another when your battery is low or if you have a new message. It's all spelled out in the quick guides, but good luck remembering what everything means. You can also customize what type of information is displayed on the Today screen and add widgets to the Sony Ericsson panel, such as Web feeds and clocks and weathers for different cities.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 allows you to customize your smartphone with nine interactive panels.

In addition to the standard seven panels, you'll be able to download more panels from other developers through Sony Ericsson's download site. Unfortunately, when we tried on our review phone, we were met with a 404-page not found. Sony Ericsson said the full site will be up and running by the time the X1 is out. While the X1 panel interface is a cool concept and we love the customization, in reality, we only used about three of the panels. It's rare that we wanted multimedia or the radio to be at the forefront. This, of course, is a personal choice, though, and we appreciate the customization option.

Below the display, there is a navigation array that consists of two soft keys, Talk and End buttons, an X1 panel key, an OK button, and an optical joystick/directional keypad with a center select button. We weren't huge fans of any of these controls, as they're small and stiff to press, particularly the two sliverlike soft keys. We missed having a Home key. The optical joystick operates similar to the optical mouse on the Samsung Omnia and Samsung Epix, but like the Omnia, the trackpad is somewhat small, limiting how much you can move around on a page. Alternatively, you can press the outer edges of the trackpad (up, down, left, right), so it acts more like a traditional navigation toggle.

Below the touch screen, you'll find a navigation array, which includes the X1 panel key, but we found these buttons small and stiff to press.

To access the keyboard, just slide the screen to the right. The sliding mechanism is smooth and feels strong enough to endure multiple openings and closings. In its open state, you'll notice that there's a slight arc to the phone. Sony Ericsson did this to provide a better ergonomic experience when using the keyboard, and we think it succeeds. The slight curve makes it comfortable to hold the phone when typing messages, and it also props the screen at a nice angle for better viewing. The screen orientation will also automatically switch from portrait to landscape mode when you open the phone. The keyboard itself is pretty good. The buttons are slightly on the smaller side but there's enough spacing between them that we think it shouldn't give most people problems. We were able to compose messages and enter text without too many errors, though the number keys are a bit hard to find at first.

Keeping in line with the shift of applications being ported on the pay-per-use model, so too are security solutions being delivered out from the capital expenditure account into the operational expenditure. Once a purview of IT departments, with strong service level agreements in place, CIO’s are finding it easier to outsource the security function as well.
P J Nath, Executive President, Enterprise Solutions, Sify Technologies points out that as investments in managed security services by the Medium Enterprises is growing at a much faster pace than traditional security solutions, it’s the Banks and financial institutions that have accepted the remote MSS delivery model with ease.
He also feels the government’s initiative to move away from paper work to having the information available centrally by automating all manual activity has resulted in a huge centralized IT infrastructure and application setup. In which security becomes an integral part as critical information transaction takes place. It’s increasingly seen that government organizations are outsourcing their IT services with MSS being part of it, though it is still early days in this segment.
This is in keeping with the trend that has been set by local Telco’s, who were the first off the block to outsourcing their entire IT infrastructure so that they could be more focused on their service delivery business.
Cisco’s Gupta feels that in the case of SMBs, the trend shifts towards outsourcing security management. A Pricewaterhouse Coopers 2007 report says that the SMB segment would increasingly look at use of outsourced security management of their first line of defense including firewall, IDS and incident reporting services. Additionally, a recent survey by Forrester estimates that 30% of SMBs outsource their enterprise applications and 59% of those are concerned about the security of their data. Salesforce.com will announce Monday its plan to host public Web sites using its Force.com platform. Called Force.com Sites, it's an aggressive effort by the company to extend its development and hosting platform more broadly across the Web, and expand beyond its roots in on-demand sales force automation software.

Developers have built tens of thousands of applications on Salesforce's Force.com platform, meaning they used Salesforce's Apex development language and run them in its data centers, where they are delivered in a software-as-a-service model.

But typically these applications are add-ons to the company's sales force automation/customer-relationship management offerings, such as a small software utility by Appirio to sync a Salesforce calendar with a Google Apps calendar.

Force.com Sites will let developers build applications to run in Salesforce.com data centers, use the company's Visualforce tool to develop public-facing Web pages, and register a domain name. Salesforce.com sees the effort as expanding the role of its Force.com platform in the bigger trend toward cloud computing.

A company, for example, could build a staff recruiting application that runs on Force.com that the general public could access on the Web. It could be presented as an independent Web site; it also could be presented as if it were part of a company's existing Web site, with a similar look and feel, but hosted by Salesforce.com.

Salesforce.com hasn't had to build out its data centers for this new offering, said Bruce Francis, the company's VP of corporate strategy, in an interview. Most of the work involved writing new software code and tweaking the Force.com platform to support access by potentially thousands of people over the Web.

Salesforce.com says an example of Force.com Sites in play is an online marketplace for Cathedral Partners that its business partner Appirio built, to match private businesses and investors. Another, Jobs4MyFriends, runs on Facebook and can be used by a company to recruit new employees by using existing employees' friend's networks.

Force.com Sites' four-tiered pricing will be based on the number of monthly page views to a site. It's currently only available as a developer preview, and is slated for general availability next year. READ MORE

When Microsoft lifted the veil on Windows Server 2008 R2 last week, the company's big push into cloud computing and Windows 7 largely trumped the server update. However, with a series of improvements to things like virtualization and performance, the well-received Windows Server 2008 gets a notable tune-up.

Server virtualization made its first appearance as an operating system feature in Windows Server 2008's Hyper-V, but Microsoft still had some catching up to do to meet the level of sophistication of competitive offerings. In Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft has made a few tweaks to Hyper-V and added some much-desired features.

Microsoft has added live virtual machine migration, a pre-condition for an automated data center and something competitors like VMware already have in their products, to Windows Server 2008 R2. With live migration, companies can move virtual images between host machines in "less than two seconds," providing no-downtime migration and better manageability.

The company has also done a bunch of work under the hood on Hyper-V. "We tend to talk about features, but a lot of infrastructure work is going on in Hyper-V too," Bill Hilf, Microsoft's general manager of Windows Server marketing and platform strategy, said in an interview. Microsoft claims the new Hyper-V will be more reliable, faster, and able to run in more configurations.

Hyper-V isn't the only virtualization technology in Windows Server 2008 getting some work done. Terminal Services, the company's presentation virtualization technology, gets a significant boost and a new name. Terminal Services becomes Remote Desktop Services. It's now supports full-on Virtual Desktop Infrastructure and gets enhanced remote management capabilities as well as Web-based access to a remote desktop instance.

Remote Desktop Services users will see significant improvements as well, though some of them will require Windows 7. New user support includes better multimedia, multiple monitor support, improved audio support, the ability to run Windows' AeroGlass user interface, and single sign-on.

Among the recent networking technologies to get big play, few have been as popular as WAN optimization and application acceleration, which seek to improve the performance of applications and data served over the network. In Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft adds branch office file caching and optimization of a few protocols, such as its proprietary Server Message Block protocol. That follows up on a jointly developed appliance from Cisco and Microsoft announced last month.

Several other new features demand some close attention as well. A new feature called DirectAccess will allow VPN-less connection to corporate networks for Windows 7 users. Microsoft's Web server, Internet Information Services, gets support for PowerShell scripting. And Windows Server 2008 R2 will support more than 64 processing cores.

It's unclear whether it will be included in Windows Server 2008 R2, or if it will be relegated to future versions of the OS, but Microsoft last week also released the first test version of its new application server technology, code-named "Dublin." Dublin blends some features of application servers and Web servers and, Microsoft says, makes it easier for developers to deploy and manage composite apps.

String variables are used when a sequence of characters (any characters not to be treated as numbers) are required for display or program control.

String variables have several symbols in common with number variables.

"=" means the same as it does in numbers, "assign the value on the right to the variable on the left".

"==" means "is equal to" except the comparison is character by character rather than the numerical value. Examples:

var s = 'hi'; // assigns "hi" to variable s
s == 'hi'; // is true
s == 'hi ya'; // is false (is not exactly the same)

will print "The same!" on your page if the variable s contains 'hi'.

stores the string "Hello,world!" in the variable s.

If you know ahead of time what the variables a and b will contain, you can accomplish the same thing with:

With the above value in s, the code:

s = s + ' -- real loud :)';
document.write("My program says: " + s);

An object can contain many variables and entire functions, and even other objects, within itself. In order to use the stuff in the object, the object must be assigned to a variable.

(Although you can make your own objects, this article deals only with objects that are built into the JavaScript language.)

To assign an object to a variable, the name of the object must have a pair of parenthesis at the end (which can have values in them, like functions) and you must use the word: new

~~ ~~ Date

Here is an example of assigning the Date object to a variable.

var d = new Date();

The variable d is now an object variable and has access to all the variables and functions within the object. To accomplish an access, type the object variable's name, then a period, then the name of the function or variable inside the object.

The following example will access several functions and store the results. Wherever you put the following code, it will print the current date and time on your page:

Notice the line: month = month + 1;

It is there because JavaScript's numerical representation of the calendar months are the digits 0 through 11, rather than the human representation of digits 1 through 12. The line adds 1 to the value returned by d.getMonth()

Also, notice the line beginning with: if(year

It is there because some browsers will display the correct 4-digit year and some browsers will display the year minus 1900. The line checks to see if year is less than 2000 and, if so, adds 1900 to it.

Let's do an example with another object.

~~ ~~ String

Sometimes, knowing the length of string variables can be essential to your program. To determine the length, you must create an object variable using the built-in: String

var s = new String('William');

The variable s is now an object variable which contains the string "William" along with several other values and functions. One of the values stored in s is the length of the string it contains. Two of the functions it contains are toUpperCase() and toLowerCase().

Much of what you do with JavaScript will require actions dependant on the contents of variables.

~~ ~~ if()

This articles series has used the if() flow control statement several times. It is of the format:

if() {
// code to execute
}

Between the parenthesis is the evaluation. Between the
curly braces is the code to execute if the evaluation
is true. Example:

if(n == 2) {
n++;
}

One-line code to execute following the if() statement does
not need to be in curly braces. And, whether or not it is
in curly braces, it can be all on one line. These two
examples work just as well as the above:

if(n == 2) { n++; }
if(n == 2) n++;

However, a multi-line code block must be within curly
braces:

if(n == 2) {
n++;
n = n * n;
}

All of the flow control statements in this section follow the same rule: If the code to run is a single line, it may be within curly braces but it is not necessary. However, if the code is multi-line, the curly braces are required.

~~ ~~ else

The if() flow control statement can have an accompanying: else

if(n == 2) n++;
else n--;

A multi-line "else" code block would look something like:

if(n == 2) n++;
else {
n = n + 21;
n = n * n;
}

If you use an else statement, it must immediately follow an if() statement.

For example, this will not run correctly:

if(n == 2) n++;
document.write('something');
else n = n - 1;

The corrected code is:

if(n == 2) n++;
else n = n - 1;
document.write('something');

~~ ~~ while()

The while() flow control statement executes it's code so long as whatever is between it's parenthesis evaluates as true:

var n = 1;
while(n <= 10) {
document.write('
' + n);
n++;
}

writes the current value of n on your page so long as the value of n is less than or equal to 10. In other words, it will write a list of numbers 1 through 10 on your page.

However, this

var n = 22;
while(n <= 10) {
document.write('
' + n);
n++;
}

will write nothing on your page because the statement between the parenthesis is never true.

~~ ~~ do ... while()

The do ... while() statement, however, will always execute it's code once because it checks the value in the parenthesis after the code is executed. Thus,

var n = 22;
do {
document.write('
' + n);
n++;
} while(n <= 10)

will print the number 22 on your page. And

var n = 1;
do {
document.write('
' + n);
n++;
} while(n <= 10)

will print the numbers 1 through 10.

~~ ~~ for()

The for() flow control statement is used to make a series of consistent changes and test a value repeatedly. There are three items within the for()'s parenthesis, separated with semi-colons.

The first item is the variable initialized to a specific value.

The second item is the check.

The third item changes the variable.

This prints the numbers 1 through 10:

for (var n = 1; n <= 10; n++) document.write('
' + n);

~~ Name Spitter

Here is a function that may amuse some people for a few moments. But then, maybe not. It's a simple thing with the purpose of demonstrating some of what has been covered in these first three parts of the JavaScript Tutorial.

The Name spitter is two JavaScript functions and a form that accepts a first name and a last name. When the button is clicked, the spitter does some calculations then opens up a popup window with the name printed twice as many times as the number of characters it contains, with ever increasing space between the names.

~~ Types of variables

In Part I of this article series you were introduced to variables. Part II used some more variables while explaining functions.

You may have come to the conclusion that JavaScript has several different types of variables. Well, you're right.

The variable type is determined by what type of value it contains.

JavaScript has 3 main types of variables:

(1) Number -- A variable containing a number. It can
be whole or decimal.

Examples: 4
4.4
44

(2) String -- A variable containing a string of
characters. It may include numbers and any
other characters. Strings are assigned to a
variable or otherwise manipulated in a JavaScript
program by enclosing them between either
single (') or double (") quotes.

Examples: '4b'
"Hello, world!"
"12 + 24"

When it is enclosed between single or double
quotes it is a string variable, even if all
the characters are numerical.

Example: "4"

Because "4" is between quotes, it signals the
browser that it is a string rather than a
number.

(3) Object -- An object is a variable which can
contain more than one value. It can contain
number(s) and string(s), together, in the same
object. An object variable can also contain
functions and even other objects.

Here are some basics about each of the variable types.

~~ ~~ Numbers

Number variables are used when number comparisons or mathematical calculations are required.

Here are some basic calculations that can be done:

Note: The equal sign used in the context of assigning a value to a variable is "determine the value or equation on the right and then let the variable on the left equal that determination". The programming code assigning a value to a variable is referred to as an assignment statement.

var n = 2; // variable n now holds the value 2
n = n * 3; // (* is multiply) variable n now holds the
// value 6
n = n / 4; // (/ is divide) variable n now holds the
// value 1.5
n = n - 7; // (- is subtract) variable n now holds the
// value -5.5
n = n + 13.5;// (+ is addition) variable n now holds the
// value 8
n++; // (++ is increment by 1) variable n now
// holds the value 9
n--; // (-- is decrement by 1) variable n now
// holds the value 8
n = n % 3; // (% is modulus -- the remainder of a
// division) variable n now holds the
// value 2
n = n * n; // variable n now holds the value 4

One could build a calculator using the above mathematical operators. A graphical calculator with a scrolling tape, operated entirely by clicking with no keyboard input being accepted, and with memory keys used to assign and display the results of interim calculations, may be a nice project for later in this series when a few more of the basics of program decision and flow control have been introduced.

Program flow is often determined by the content of a variable. This

if(n == 10) { document.write('It is 10.'); }

will print "It is 10." on your page if the variable n equals 10.

Program flow can also be decided by comparing two or more variables and determining whether they are equal or in what way they are unequal.

Here are some number variable comparisons that can be done. Each comparison yields either "true" or "false":

(n == b) // true if both n and b contain the same number.
Otherwise, false.
(Note: "==" is a test for equality while "="
is an assignment statement symbol.)
(n < b) // true if n is less than b. Otherwise, false.
(n <= b) // true if n is less than or equal to b. Otherwise,
false.
(n > b) // true if n is more than b. Otherwise, false.
(n >= b) // true if n is more than or equal to b. Otherwise,
false.
(n != b) // true if n is not equal to b. Otherwise, false.

In the above examples, the variable b could be an actual number. For example,

if(n < 10) { document.write('Is less than 10.'); }

will print "Is less than 10." on your page if the variable n is less than 10.

When the page first loads, it assigns the current (this moment) date/time value to the variable Now. Then it uses that value to determine the current millisecond number with which to initialize the variable Start.

When you click the "Check Elapsed Milliseconds" on your page, it calls your decider() function. decider() calls the function elapsedmilliseconds() to determine the number of milliseconds that have elapsed since the page was first loaded -- when the variable Start was initialized.

When elapsedmilliseconds() is called, it determines the difference between it's own calculation and the value stored in the variable Start. It stores the result in variable diff.

Then elapsedmilliseconds() returns the value of the variable diff, which is what decider() assigns to its own variable d.

Last, decider() decides whether or not the page has been displayed a total of less than 10 minutes (600,000 milliseconds). If true, it displays an alert box with the value stored in d. Otherwise, it sends the visitor off to http://willmaster.com/

Hopefully, this has given you a glimmer of what is possible. Not only can you call your elapsedmilliseconds() function whenever you want, but other functions can call it, too, and make decisions based on what it returns.

Further elaboration and uses for program decision and flow control statements such as if(), for(), and while() will be in another section of this tutorial series.

(By the way, it took me 243740 milliseconds to write the above seven paragraphs while eating three small handfuls of popcorn.)

Let's suppose you want to modify your decider() function so you can tell it how many seconds to wait before sending the visitor off somewhere. And let's suppose you also want to tell it the location of that somewhere.

So you will modify your decider() function to accept a number (for the number of seconds) and a string of characters (for the URL). It will also be modified to use those data units where appropriate.

Here is the modified decider() function:

function decider(s,url)
{
var d = elapsedmilliseconds();
s = s * 1000; // s multiplies itself by 1000
if(d < s) { alert("Elapsed milliseconds: " + d); }
else { window.location = url; }
}

The decider() function receives two units of data when it
is called, the number of seconds and the url, and stores
them in variables s and url, respectively.

The variable "d" is then compared with "s" to see whether
the alert box is displayed or the visitor is redirected to
the value in "url".

You can call your modified decider() function with

or with

(90 seconds)

(45 seconds)

The above will send your function either the number 90 or the number 45 (for the number of seconds) and the string of characters http://mydomain.com (for the URL).

In a later article of this series, you will learn how to type stuff into a form (such as the number of seconds and the url, for the above example) and send that data to the function -- rather than hard-coding the data into a link.

And, you will often want to display function results in ways other than plain alert boxes.

Future articles will help you build popup boxes with your own design, on demand. They will help you display text and graphics on your page depending on which browser your visitor is using, depending on a name typed into a form, or other decisions your custom functions make.

Much of what you do with JavaScript depends on your program making decisions based on the contents of variables:

if([something]) then do this, else do that.

while([something]) do this.

for([each of a series]) do this.

LONDON (AFP) — Chinese-backed computer hackers attacked the internal computer network of British airplane engine maker Rolls-Royce, The Times said in its Monday edition.
Citing unidentified security sources, the daily said that while the hackers did not manage to get through to the company's sensitive data, the attack earlier this year "nearly took them (Rolls-Royce) out".
According to The Times, Anglo-Dutch energy company Royal Dutch Shell uncovered a spy ring made up of Chinese nationals at its facilities in Houston, in the United States, also earlier this year.

The two companies declined to comment when contacted by The Times.
"The Chinese -- the People's Liberation Army -- have been up to it for a good while, but it has really come to the fore recently," a security source told the paper.
"They tried to get inside Rolls-Royce -- their IT systems.
"They did not get enough inside, but it was a sufficiently big attack to get very worried. They got to the so-called not very important information before being rooted out."
The Times report comes just days after it emerged that the head of Britain's domestic security service warned business leaders that China has been carrying out state-sponsored espionage against vital parts of the economy.

Jonathan Evans, the director-general of MI5, wrote to 300 chief executives and security heads at banks, accountancy and legal firms, warning them they were under attack from "Chinese state organisations" via the Internet.
Rolls-Royce's computer network was apparently infiltrated remotely, by a specially-designed Trojan horse programme, which allows people to gain unauthorised access to a person's computer.
At Shell, meanwhile, the company reportedly discovered a "special interest group" made up of Chinese nationals who were encouraged to socialise outside of work hours.
According to The Times, however, the group was "a front for recruiting Chinese nationals" whose families were still in China and who were told to help "for the good of the motherland."
"It was a form of threat," the security source told the paper.

"This particular European oil company was made aware and uncovered the spying operation, where the Chinese were put under moral pressure to give information."

What Does Free Mean? or What do you mean by Free Software?

Note: In February 1998 a group moved to replace the term "Free Software" with "Open Source Software". As will become clear in the discussion below, they both refer to essentially the same thing.

Many people new to free software find themselves confused because the word "free" in the term "free software" is not used the way they expect. To them free means "at no cost". An English dictionary lists almost twenty different meanings for "free". Only one of them is "at no cost". The rest refer to liberty and lack of constraint. When we speak of Free Software, we mean freedom, not price.

Software that is free only in the sense that you don't need to pay to use it is hardly free at all. You may be forbidden to pass it on, and you are almost certainly prevented from improving it. Software licensed at no cost is usually a weapon in a marketing campaign to promote a related product or to drive a smaller competitor out of business. There is no guarantee that it will stay free.
Truly free software is always free. Software that is placed in the public domain can be snapped up and put into non-free programs. Any improvements then made are lost to society. To stay free, software must be copyrighted and licensed.
To the uninitiated, either a piece of software is free or it isn't. Real life is much more complicated than that. To understand what kinds of things people are implying when they call software free we must take a little detour into the world of software licenses.
Copyrights are a method of protecting the rights of the creator of certain types of works. In most countries, software you write is automatically copyrighted. A license is the authors way of allowing use of their creation (software in this case), by others, in ways that are acceptable to them.
